About Kelimutu Lake

Kelimutu Lake is an area of the crater lake situated on the top of Mount Kelimutu (volcano), that located on Flores Island of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The location of this mountain is in the village Pemo, Ende Regency.

The lake is known as the Three Colors Lake because it has three different colors, namely red, blue, and white. However, the colors are always changing with the passage of time. The lake is located at an altitude of 1,631 meters above sea level.

Kelimutu is a combination words of “keli” meaning mountain and “mutu” which means to boiling. So that literally Kelimutu meansboiling mountain.

According to local belief, the colors on the lake Flores has the meaning of each and has a very powerful natural force.
Lake or in local language called “Tiwu” of Kelimutu can be devided in three sections according to the color of the lake. Blue Color lake or “Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai” is a gathering place for the souls of young people who have died. Red Color Lake or “Tiwu Ata Polo” is a gathering place for the souls of people who had died and as long as he lived always do evil / magick. And the white color Lake or “Tiwu Mbupu Ata” is a gathering place for the souls of parents who have died.

The total area of Kelimutu lake about 1,051,000 square meters with a volume of 1292 million cubic meters of water. Boundary between the lake was a narrow stone walls prone to landslides. This wall is very steep with 70 degree angle. Lake wall height ranges from 50 to 150 meters.

At the beginning, Kelimutu Lake was discovered by Van Such Telen, a Dutch citizen, in 1915. Its beauty is more popular after Y. Bouman describes in his writings in 1929. Since that time the foreign tourists started coming to enjoy the lake known as the armature for the local community. Those who come not only lovers of beauty, but also researchers who want to know a natural occurrence that is very rare.
